One of Starwood’s newest hotel brands is Tribute Portfolio, which is a collection of independent hotels. Hyatt copied the idea shortly after Starwood introduced it, with their Hyatt Unbound Collection.
I love the concept in theory. I love loyalty programs and points, but don’t necessarily love cookie cutter hotels. Why not allow more independent hotels to join major hotel chains, so you can get a local experience without forgoing points?
I had the chance to stay at Starwood’s first Tribute Portfolio hotel, the Royal Palm South Beach Miami.

Royal-Palm-South-Beach-Starwood - 42Unfortunately there are a couple of problems with Tribute Portfolio. First of all, the brand isn’t growing very quickly — as of now they have just nine hotels, though that’s expected to grow over the coming years. Furthermore, in some issues it seems the hotels don’t quite meet peoples’ expectations. Tribute Portfolio is supposed to be a step down from Luxury Collection, and I think that’s something many people don’t understand.
With all that out of the way, Starwood has a promotion for those staying at Tribute Portfolio properties over the coming months.
You can earn double Starpoints for Tribute Portfolio stays between August 1 and October 31, 2016.
Registration is required by October 16, 2016, and there’s no limit to how many bonus points you can earn. See here for full promotion terms.
Through this promotion you earn double base Starpoints, meaning you’re earning an extra two Starpoints per dollar spent. I value Starpoints at ~2.2 cents each, so to me that’s an additional return of ~4.4% on Starwood spend.
Keep in mind that this is in addition to the points you usually earn. For example, without any other promotions I’d earn eight Starpoints per dollar spent at Tribute Portfolio hotels when paying with either my Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express or Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express. That’s because:
  • I earn 2 base Starpoints
  • I earn 2 bonus Starpoints through this promotion
  • I earn 2 bonus Starpoints for being a 75 night Platinum member
  • I earn 2 bonus Starpoints for paying with an SPG Amex

In and of itself this promotion isn’t a reason to switch any stays to a Tribute Portfolio hotel, though if you’re going to stay at one anyway, you might as well take advantage of this promotion. Personally I need to make a Tribute Portfolio stay soon so I can visit all Starwood brands this year, so I’ll certainly register and earn double Starpoints.
Have you stayed at a Tribute Portfolio property? What was your experience like?
