Nasarawa Sate government said on Tuesday that it has commenced investigation into the cause of the death of two workers who lost their lives during the visit of the national leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) led by Ayuba Wabba in the state.
The NLC leadership was in Nasarawa to intervene between organised labour and government over the one-month-old industrial action embarked upon over salary cut in the state.
Barrister Yusuf Usman, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, made this known on Tuesday while briefing newsmen shortly after the state executive council meeting held in Government House, Lafia, the state capital.
He said from the official report by the relevant security agencies two workers were confirmed dead during the incident that occurred on Friday, July 29, 2016.
He added that one was allegedly killed by a pellet while the other was killed as result of severe injury caused by large crowd but certainly not a bullet wound.
Yusuf, who regretted the unfortunate incident, said that if the organised labour in the state had listened to advice of their national leaders, the incident would have been averted.
“The council expressed deep regrets over the incident and shared in the grief of the family of the deceased and prayed to Almighty God for the repose of the deceased souls.
“Meanwhile, full investigation is in progress by the relevant security agencies, and council to assure the bereaved families that the perpetrators of the act would be brought to book,” he said.
On the plans of the state government to help the deceased family, the Attorney General said, “First, let me clarify what happened. What happened is not the position of Nasarawa State government; it is the position of Security Council. And whether the council would advise the government on what to do depends on the outcome of the investigation,” Barrister Usman added.
The Attorney General, however, called on citizens in the state to remain calm and go about their normal lawful business as government was in full in control of the situation
